Hi and welcome to Mama's in Stitches! My name is Sam, and I am the fiber artist who makes all of the things you see here!
Born and raised in Upstate NY; I still reside here today (only a few towns over) with my husband, our 2 kids, 2 cats, 2 bearded dragons, and our beloved pup Roo!
All my life, I have never met a craft I didn't like!! I also have always loved to learn new things.
As a child I always loved crafts; whether it was coloring, drawing, or making crafts with my mom and my grandmother. At around 12 years old, my aunt taught me how to chain and single crochet. This started my crochet journey making baby blankets and throw blankets as gifts. In college I decided to teach myself how to double crochet and triple crochet my checking books out of the library and navigating these stitches by following the text and pictures. In my teens my grandmother taught me how to use a sewing machine and I have made so many things over the years!
In 2012 when my oldest was born, I found myself in awe over the crocheted hats and diaper cover sets I saw other fiber artist and designers make on Facebook. An so began teaching myself how to read a pattern by googling lingo and abbreviations, as well as learning how to crochet in a round. Along with learning new skills, this new endeavor brought my discovery of the half double crochet stitch! I was SO excited. Many hats were made for my daughter as well as other children in my life.
When my son was born in 2015, I became highly intrigued in crocheted stuffed animals for my kids... or otherwise known as amigurumi. (Ah-me-grrr-uh-me) Having taught myself how to read and pattern and crochet in a round, made this new journey a little easier! That said, the first couple stuffies were a little rough. Baby Blue Bear still sleeps in my daughter's bed 6 years later, and he's looking well loved! As with anything in life, with time came experience and my amigurumis began to look better! In 2020, the big amigurumi craze started, and I was HOOKED, literally! Blanket yarn stuffies have become my niche, and I absolutely love the size and squishy snuggles they provide! I still make smaller items from time to time, as well as hats and blankets. If I'm being honest though, big amigurumi is where my heart is and I fall more in love with each one I create!
In 2021, I had many things up my sleeve. I embraced my desire to design and create patterns for others to use, and have been creating several patterns behind the scenes that I hope to share with the world in the future! I have become well known for my rounded amigurumi patterns which many beginners have told me have gotten them started in their crochet journey. Sell crocheted plushies at markets? I participate in many markets throughout the year and often try to design things I feel will sell for others! More recently I debuted my diaper babies collection that I have been working on for quite some time. The floppy arms and legs have always been my favorite style and these cuties make you just want to squish them!
